Shouldering Media Responsibility for People-to-People Exchanges
Speech by Shi Feng, Editor-in-Chief (General Manager) of Xinjiang Daily, Director of Xinjiang New Media Center
Distinguished guests,
Friends from the media,
Ladies and gentlemen,
As a representative of local media outlets in Xinjiang, I am honored to speak at the World Media Summit and share some thoughts with my dear colleagues from the media worldwide. The theme of my presentation is “Shouldering Media Responsibility for People-to-People Exchanges.”
At this time last year, Zhao Chunhua, my fellow journalist from Xinjiang Daily, and Alikbek, a journalist from Turan TV in Kazakhstan, collaborated on reporting the heartwarming story of Chinese musician Xian Xinghai and Kazakh musician Bakhytzhan Baikadamov. The story of the two musicians who met and became best friends despite difficulties in wartime was known by the public thanks to the reporting of Zhao and Alikbek.
In his speech at Kazakhstan's Nazarbayev University on September 7, 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed building the Silk Road Economic Belt. Last year marked the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative. Xinjiang Daily organized a large-scale cross-border multimedia reporting program titled “Road of Prosperity.” With 31 multimedia journalists in seven reporting teams spending 58 days and nights in 16 cities across five countries, we produced 309 pieces of content. We documented heartwarming stories and memorable moments of the exchanges between nations and individuals along the Belt and Road. Zhao and Alikbek made the Chinese and Kazakh musicians' story widely known during the program.
Xinjiang Daily is the largest media conglomerate in Xinjiang. We have a comprehensive portfolio of 19 publications, including the Xinjiang Daily newspaper, Today's Xinjiang magazine, Youlin and The Bridge of Continent foreign language journals. We operate an extensive media network of over 70 platforms, such as the Shiliuyun mobile app and Tianshannet digital news site. We have established a multilingual and multimedia communication matrix that seamlessly integrates newspapers, magazines, websites, mobile apps, social media accounts and digital terminals. Our circulation and viewership have surpassed 50 million.
Amity between the people holds the key to sound relations between states. Since ancient times, China's Xinjiang has served as a pivotal hub along the Silk Road. Today, it stands as the core area of the Silk Road Economic Belt. As a prominent media outlet in this place of pivotal significance, we actively embrace our journalistic responsibility of fostering mutual understanding among the people.
We believe that the media plays a crucial role in connecting people of different cultural backgrounds.
In this photograph, it is a coffee shop called “Dili and Diya Café.” It is located in the old town of Kashi, Xinjiang's Kashi Prefecture. The coffee shop is named after its owners who are a young couple. Dili is a Uygur man from Kashi while Diya comes from Tanzania. They met and fell in love in college in southeast China's Fujian Province. After graduation, the young couple returned to Kashi, started their coffee business as well as a happy family. Diya said she found her love and had decided to settle down in Xinjiang.
We have many more of such stories in our special short video program of InXinjiang. Protagonists of the program come from many countries. They experience a true Xinjiang and make friends in Xinjiang, bearing witness to how people can be closely bonded when they got the chance to get to know each other.
We believe that the media is a participant in promoting people-to-people ties.
Our magazines Youlin and The Bridge of Continent are distributed in Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, respectively, in English, Kazakh, Russian, and Tajik languages. These four publications are collaboratively edited and published by Xinjiang Daily along with local media partners in countries where they are distributed. The publication facilitates communication between China and foreign nations. Additionally, with these magazines, we have organized over 10 events for cultural exchanges in partnership with our media partners from Central Asia, West Asia, and South Asia.
On March 7, 2023, we organized a special event in Tajikistan to commemorate International Women's Day. A Tajik girl whose Chinese name is Yueyue is the one of the most diligent students at the local Confucius Classroom. She learned how to make exquisite flowers and gave them to her mother as a gift. In September this year, we had a book sharing event titled China and Kazakhstan: A Bond Beyond Distance at the National Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan. There was a diverse array of activities, including calligraphy demonstrations, tea art exhibitions, and captivating performances featuring traditional Chinese and Kazakh musical instruments at the event. Many were intrigued.
We believe that the media is a driving force in enhancing people-to-people ties.
On April 26 this year, American youth Alex, who was cycling in Xinjiang, encountered a severe snowstorm and got trapped in Barkol Kazakh Autonomous County of Hami City. When he was facing imminent danger due to exhaustion from extreme cold and hunger, local police promptly located him and provided necessary assistance. He spent a comforting night at the residence of herdsman Aoernibieke. During an interview with Tianshannet, tears welled up in Alex's eyes as he emotionally expressed that Xinjiang will forever hold a special place in his heart.
We have documented numerous moments like this. Belgian entrepreneur Danny, who established his business in Xinjiang, favors barbecue at Bridgehead Brothers' restaurant. South Korean hairdresser An Jong-euk spent nearly 20 years in Xinjiang and is now more of a Xinjiang local than a South Korean in his friends' eyes. Turkish confectionery merchant came to Xinjiang in 2009, met a local girl and started a family in Xinjiang. During the last Spring Festival, he invited my colleagues to celebrate the Chinese New Year with his family. By recording stories one after another like these, we bring people closer and forge friendships.
As an important platform for international communication in Xinjiang, Tianshannet presents news information and stories of Xinjiang in five languages, including English and Russian. Plans are underway to establish Arabic and Turkish websites. We are capable of reaching users across all five continents. In recent years, Tianshannet has created an array of columns and special programs that employ diverse channels to tell the story of Xinjiang in the new era. Through these efforts, we are working to help the world people to learn, know and understand a true and multifaced Xinjiang.
Ladies and gentlemen! Nothing, not even mountains and seas, can separate people with common goals and ideals. Working in the media, we are tasked with recording our times and advocating for a better world. It is our duty and obligation to foster mutual understanding among people of different countries. Xinjiang Daily is ready to work with media outlets from across the world, establish platforms for communication, enhance cooperation mechanisms, diversify ways of exchanges, and jointly shoulder the responsibility of the media in promoting mutual understanding among people and building a community with a shared future for mankind!
Thank You!
